The #satellitenavigation# journey of the cart yesterday was great fun but in driving rain and high winds it was a challenge to say the least and gave a small insight into what it must be like to be without a home and in transit in all weathers.
In some ways, the conditions made it even more relevant. The cart made the journey safely however, with lots of beeping and waving from passing traffic and only one stop for running repairs.
There was a little cafuffle in Winckley Square as cars were held up for a few minutes whilst the cart got up the hill and some bemused faces from passengers on a passing bus whilst the cart and its entourage waited at the traffic lights, but all in all it was largely uneventful and made the journey in record time. We had anticipated it taking longer but then there were two pushers as well as two pullers, so that made a difference as did the rain – a great incentive to get to Oxheys as quick as they could for some shelter!
On arrival at Oxheys, a little manoeuvring was needed to get the cart into the loading bay in the mill and by then the entire group were soaked to the skin but a warm welcome awaited along with warm drinks, sandwiches, amid much cheering, patting of backs and dripping on floor. Artist Susan Walsh inspected her cart to make sure it and its contents were intact whilst our fettler Carl swept the water on the floor outside as much as possible.
As the cart dries out over the next few days, Susan will complete her installation ready for the exhibition opening on Thursday evening between 5-7pm. Come along then to see the show which will feature a short film and stills photographs documenting the journey, along with the lists provided by participants of the items they would take with them if they suddenly had to leave. Lists have been coming in from lots of people unable to attend or take part in person but who want to be involved so if you want to send your list do so here and we will forward to Susan to include in the display. Adding lists will continue on throughout the exhibition until it closes on June 16th, so it will evolve as time goes by.
After the Preview evening on Thursday, the exhibition is open Fridays and Saturdays 11am-4pm until June 16th and other activities are planned so watch this space.
