It seems hard to believe it is almost one year since we first opened our doors at Oxheys Mill Studios. We opened our very first exhibition and held an open day on 11th August 2011 but the first visitors actually came during the last weekend of July – these were the artists who responded to our call for entries to that open exhibition. Without them and their support, we would not have had a show to put on!
To celebrate our first year, we are holding another exhibition but this time, the theme is the mill itself. The show will open on 2nd August 6-8 and on August 11th, a year to the day since our Open day, we are holding an Open Studios day from 11-4. Everyone is welcome to attend – we hope to see you then.

For Oxheys to have been chosen as the first venue outside of London by the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP) for their National Photography Awards exhibition, was exciting. This was also the first time that the organisation had shown work in an arts venue so it was going to be a different experience for them as well as us but it was one which we think they found enlightening. They loved Oxheys – so much so that they are planning to hold another event here whilst this exhibition is still on.
Each time we hold an exhibition at Oxheys, the project space is transformed and this time it completely changed, offering a very different experience. The response from visitors was again positive and many of those who have been to previous events remarked at how different each show is. That is exactly how we like it and what we strive to achieve but each one becomes that bit more challenging as a result. The clean cut lines and no-fuss display of this photographic exhibition really look contemporary, enhanced in the industrial setting of the mill.
The exhibition preview evening saw a variety of visitors which included many regulars along with some new faces. Some were artists, viewing the work as artists viewing another visual art form whilst in contrast, photographers tend to view other photographers’ work differently and other visitors were there just to enjoy the work and the event. This led to some interesting conversations and many of the photographic contingency seemed to see the exhibition, and the work in it, in a new way, out of its normal environment.
The images being displayed are, of course, stunning as you would expect having won national awards and cover every genre of professional photography from fashion and portraiture, scientific and nature to landscapes and industrial. The Gold, Silver and Bronze winners from each category are on display and almost every visitor had an opinion on which they would have selected and why – making even more interesting conversations.
All visitors to this exhibition are also able to take away a free copy of The Photographer magazine, whilst stocks last.
The exhibition is on until July 28th, open Fridays and Saturdays 11am-4pm – other times/days by appointment only.
Do join our mailing list to keep informed of future exhibitions and events. More information on the BIPP visit www.bipp.com

We are really excited to be hosting this exhibition and that it is coming to Preston so please do join us for a special Private View event on Thursday 21st June between 6-8pm.
Running alongside the exhibition is an opportunity to have a portfolio review with a BIPP Approved Assessor so if you would like some advice and constructive feedback on your work, book a slot on Thursday 21st June

Proving to be one of the most thought-provoking shows we have had at Oxheys to date, Susan Walsh’s Satellite Navigation exhibition continues to draw in visitors who are keen to add their own lists to those already on display, on three walls around the project space. The lists make fascinating reading. Many people have offered alternative lists according to whether they were leaving in a hurry or had a little more time to prepare but that is kind of the point and the more you think about it it, the more possibilities unravel.
If you have the time to plan in advance then of course, there is more time to prepare and arrange transportation so the amount you could take with you will increase. But what about if there was a 4-minute warning, or a massive explosion – you would literally have no time to think, just get out and go. Or perhaps you have been evicted, have somebody after you or just need to leave in hurry for some reason – what would you take then?
And what about people for whom life in transit is just the way it is? Susan’s questions become even more relevant when thought of in this light as in many cases the people in question may live a life of poverty and so have no real possessions – for them, the only things they can take are the bare necessities of life such as whatever food or clothing they can ay their hands on. Mobile phones, cameras and chargers are simply not relevant in this very real situation.
If you haven’t yet added your list to this exhibition, please do so. Either complete a list during a visit whilst the show is still or visit Susan’s website and submit online.
The exhibition closes 17 June open Fridays and Saturdays 11-4. Other times by appointment.

The opening of this latest exhibition took place on May 3rd, attracting a number of visitors many of whom had followed the journey of the cart through the streets of Preston the Sunday previously and who had come to see it in situ along with the rest of the show. Many visitors had not been to our venue before however and that is always encouraging when we meet new people and get to show them around.
The cart of course, was the star of the show and looked fantastic – it had been secured in the loading bay area and looked magnificent. The new rails alongside the loading bay enabled visitors to peer inside the cart and see all of the ‘stuff’ Susan had packed into it ready for her journey. Other visitors went down the steps into the bay to have a closer look at the cart itself, the wheels and the delightful but poignant signage, painted by artist Lubaina Himid as part of a collaboration. After Lauretta Rapley’s tapestry horse which was suspended in the loading bay for the last show, and Susan’s cart parked here for this one, the loading bay is fast becoming a sought-after spot for exhibiting at Oxheys.
Inside the project space area, a series of six photographic prints illustrated the key stages of the cart’s journey through Preston, depicting the awful weather and the struggle the guys who pulled the cart had in places. Seeing them queueing in traffic along the route, making running repairs and looking like drowned rats provides some entertainment. A slideshow on a screen shows photographic stills documenting the entire journey and the impact of the bad weather on that day, capturing moments along the way and showing a variety of emotions. These photographs, along with another series of prints showing a more abstract view of events, are by Denise Swanson, also part of the collaboration.
On another screen, a short documentary film by Susan illustrated the use of carts by people in transit from various times in history and from different cultures and parts of the world. This is a fascinating kaleidoscope of old photographs, film, drawings, ideas and research which helps put the entire show into context and is certainly worth watching.
The walls around the project space are filling with lists contributed by visitors to the show of the items they would take with them if they had to leave for a life in transit. They make for some entertaining and thought-provoking reading and more are being added every day by visitors and by people submitting online. If you have not yet submitted your list, do so – either visit the show (on until June 17th) or submits online at Susan’s website

Arrival at Oxheys Mill
The #satellitenavigation# journey of the cart yesterday was great fun but in driving rain and high winds it was a challenge to say the least and gave a small insight into what it must be like to be without a home and in transit in all weathers.
In some ways, the conditions made it even more relevant. The cart made the journey safely however, with lots of beeping and waving from passing traffic and only one stop for running repairs.
There was a little cafuffle in Winckley Square as cars were held up for a few minutes whilst the cart got up the hill and some bemused faces from passengers on a passing bus whilst the cart and its entourage waited at the traffic lights, but all in all it was largely uneventful and made the journey in record time. We had anticipated it taking longer but then there were two pushers as well as two pullers, so that made a difference as did the rain – a great incentive to get to Oxheys as quick as they could for some shelter!
On arrival at Oxheys, a little manoeuvring was needed to get the cart into the loading bay in the mill and by then the entire group were soaked to the skin but a warm welcome awaited along with warm drinks, sandwiches, amid much cheering, patting of backs and dripping on floor. Artist Susan Walsh inspected her cart to make sure it and its contents were intact whilst our fettler Carl swept the water on the floor outside as much as possible.
As the cart dries out over the next few days, Susan will complete her installation ready for the exhibition opening on Thursday evening between 5-7pm. Come along then to see the show which will feature a short film and stills photographs documenting the journey, along with the lists provided by participants of the items they would take with them if they suddenly had to leave. Lists have been coming in from lots of people unable to attend or take part in person but who want to be involved so if you want to send your list do so here and we will forward to Susan to include in the display. Adding lists will continue on throughout the exhibition until it closes on June 16th, so it will evolve as time goes by.
After the Preview evening on Thursday, the exhibition is open Fridays and Saturdays 11am-4pm until June 16th and other activities are planned so watch this space.
