Thursday 8th March saw the opening of this exhibition and the re-opening of Oxheys after a few weeks of redecorating. The exhibition, which was curated by Prof Lubaina Himid MBE, features work by Oxheys’ female artists in residence, as part of International Women’s Day celebrations, on the themes of time, place and negotiated space.
This exhibition is rather different from those we have held in the past, as it is the first to be curated externally and features work from just six artists. This would have been exciting anyway but to have the chance to by curated by someone as respected as Lubaina, who currently has two exhibitions at Tate Britain in London: ‘Thin Black Line(s)’ and ‘Migrations’ and another, ‘Cotton Threads’ at the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester, was a real boost. The experience of working with a curator was invaluable – we all learned a great deal and will find it a useful experience for the future. Lubaina considered each artists work individually and tried to ensure that each work could have conversations with the others without any of it looking staged or set up – she has put together a wonderful show and we are really proud of it. We hope you will come and see it whilst it is on.
The Private View was once again, a busy event as visitors came from all over the northwest to see the work on display and to meet, chat and enjoy the evening. More pictures from the exhibition to follow.
The exhibition will run until April 20th, open Fridays and Saturdays 11-4pm – all other times by appointment only please.

We were thrilled to be invited to take part in the Arts Trail in Preston for International Women’s Day. Our open studio session started an hour earlier than planned when a swarm of students descended upon us, keen to explore and have a look around the studios, talk with the artists and have a sneak peek at the ‘Time, Place & Negotiated Space’ exhibition.
We were taken a little by surprise, not only as they were earlier than expected but they were all so interested in what we had done at the mill, how we set up the studios and how we worked as artists and organised exhibitions. It was wonderful to have so much interest and to see the place with so many people in it – they were everywhere, on all three floors and appeared to be enjoying themselves. We had a school party in from Blackpool as well and that was great to see how interested the children were. Our landlord, Deputy Mayor Albert Richardson, came along to greet everyone and was surprised at how many people were there. Our thanks to everyone involved – it was a great session and it has inspired us to hold more open studio events in the future.

After spending a complete day hanging and installing work for the upcoming “Time, Place & Negotiated Space” exhibition for International Women’s Day, we are thrilled to see the project space come back to life after being closed for weeks whilst we have redecorated. It looks fabulous and the exhibition is really exciting!
UCLan’s Professor of Contemporary Art Lubaina Himid, has curated this show which features work from each of the female resident artists at Oxheys. We are excited because we feel it takes us to the next level and it feels like a ‘real’ gallery! Spending the day with Lubaina, listening to her thoughts and ideas on how and why to hang or install work in the various parts of the space was enlightening – and we did have some fun, as well. Our good friend David Henckel was on hand to climb ladders, fix things to the ceiling rafters and otherwise get into awkward places so many thanks to him for giving up his day and of course to Lubaina for giving up hers – we hope we have done you proud!
We can’t wait for the opening on Thursday 8th – we will have an open studio session between 1-2.30pm and then the exhibition Private View is between 6-8pm. See you there!

We have been very busy at Oxheys over the past few weeks – although closed to the public, we have still been there working hard, trying to finish off some of the jobs that still needed doing. It’s tough when we can see all of things that we’d like to do in the mill but trying to fit the time in around jobs and our work as artists is sometimes difficult.
Our priority was to finish off the projects space/gallery with another coat of paint on the walls and also to repaint the floor. Whilst we did do it when we first moved in, it was done quickly and after six months it was clear it needed doing again. So off we went to buy more paint, polyfiller and other materials, with a few weeks to get the job done.
Lauretta, our newest artist when we started, got her initiation by painting the walls in the stairwell down to the basement. This area hadn’t been done previously due to lack of time but now there was the chance to do it properly and smarten it up. She has done a cracking job which has made a real difference. Julie, Hannah and Denise all helped paint all of the project space walls with another couple of coats of a better quality paint this time, so hopefully it will last a bit longer. Evelyn, who was recovering from surgery, cleaned the leather sofas and kept us plied with brews and buns and lifted our spirits and persuaded a friend to paint the upstairs bathroom and fix the plasterboard wall on the ground floor. Norma who only joined part way through these renovations was thrown in a the deep end as well and helped Simon to repaint the entire project space floor – that was a huge task and they have both done a sterling job, it just looks so much better.
So, we are just about ready to start the installation for the International Women’s Day exhibition – it will be great to see the project space filled with art again after being bare for so many weeks.

Oxheys Mill Studios is home to a variety of artists, including two martial artists who use the venue during the evenings for practising their skills. They had been sharing a studio space in the basement but as they felt that the project space met their needs and they did not really need a complete studio, some internal re-organisation freed up a space in the basement between Hannah and Lauretta.
It didn’t take long for it to be snapped up and Norma Foulds joins us in February. We welcome Norma, who is an artist currently studying an MA in Fine Art: Education, working in a variety of media. She has joined us just in time to take part in the International Women’s Day Exhibition opening on March 8th. She’ll have to get cracking! There’s not much time but we look forward to working with her.

Wishful thinking? Perhaps but it is our Winter exhibition rather than the season in general, that closes tomorrow, Friday 27th January after a successful run in which three art works have been sold and we have welcomed an increasing number of visitors through our doors.
The comments in the Visitors’ Book are really encouraging, with many visitors returning after seeing one or more of our previous exhibitions and stating it was the ‘best show yet’! That makes us feel really excited as it shows we must be doing something right and also that we are getting better at doing it. Each show we put on, we learn something new – about the building, about local artists, about how much enthusiasm and potential there is in Preston and also about ourselves and what we are trying to create at Oxheys. We want to thank everyone who has attended an event and supported us to date – we really could not have done it without you!
We are ‘going dark’ for February whilst we carry out some essential maintenance and decorating in the building but we will be back with a new show opening on 8th March. This is a really special one and details will be announced soon – meanwhile, mark the date in your diaries and join us 6-8pm
