Chernobyl talk went down a storm

By Denise on November 27, 2015

When we first announced this opportunity to hear master photographer Bryn Griffiths talk about his Chernobyl project, we had so many advance bookings it looked like being standing room only as we don’t have that many seats! On the night, the bad weather sadly resulted in a few that couldn’t make it but despite the howling winds and torrential rain storms, a good number of visitors turned out and without exception, all were glad they had done so. As one closes, another opens

By Denise on October 27, 2015

The delightfully thoughtful ‘Walking My Dog‘  exhibition by Alan Pickering is closing this weekend, so the last chance to see is this Friday & Saturday 12-3pm. If you haven’t yet been, do call in and see it this week.

As one closes, so another opens and as we take down Alan’s show, we will also be installing the next – Bryn Griffith’s award-winning Chernobyl exhibition of fascinating fine art images of post-nuclear buildings opens next week. With access to restricted areas in Chernobyl, this is a rare opportunity to view this award-winning body of work. Do join us for the private view on Friday 6th November from 6-8pm.

Bryn will also be giving a talk on the Chernobyl project on Friday November 20th at 7.30pm – it is free to attend but booking essential

Walking My Dog – a fine exhibition of photography

By Denise on October 14, 2015

Alan Pickering’s first solo exhibition of fine art photography is receiving some excellent feedback from visitors, some of whom travelled a long way to see the show. Opening on October 1st with live sound scapes performed by our friend Craig Miller, aka ChIMG_0702elytherium, the show provides a perfect opportunity to go for a walk and experience the images that Alan sees everyday as he walks his dog.

We can’t provide the dog sadly but you still get to experience going for a walk as you move around the project space and discover the images. The peaceful atmosphere is encouraging a very thoughtful response to a body of work which really needs time and quiet space to take in and enjoy.

The images speak for themselves but Alan’s handiwork in making all of the frames has also been commented on by almost everyone who has seen the show. They are a work of art in themselves.

Our Lancashire Encounter weekend

Oxheys Mill Studios pops up at the Harris Museum & Gallery

Oxheys Mill Studios pops up at the Harris Museum & Gallery

We spent a delightful weekend in residence in the beautiful cafe in the Harris Museum & Gallery, along with Chelytherium playing his amazing soundscapes and a pop-up display of residents’ artwork.

At Oxheys Mill, residents were hosting open studios alongside the last days of the Lancashire Artists Network 2015 Open exhibition. It was a lovely way to celebrate our 4th birthday, all part of the inaugural Lancashire Encounter. Continue reading “Our Lancashire Encounter weekend”

Preparing for a Lancashire encounter

By Denise on August 25, 2015

It has been relatively quiet at Oxheys over the past few weeks, with residents on holiday or just taking a break and enjoying some of the sunshine – well, in between the Preston downpours! We might have to boil our water at the moment but at least there is plenty of it – no hosepipe bans for us! But as ‘summer’ starts to wind up, we start to crank back into life and prepare for the upcoming Lancashire Encounter that is due to hit Preston in a few weeks. All set for ‘Change’ – 2015 open exhibition

By Denise on June 22, 2015

Having been quite selective, we have now installed what we think is a fabulous show with something for everyone. The optional theme of ‘Change‘ has been widely interpreted, as we hoped, with some very really interesting work. Continue reading “All set for ‘Change’ – 2015 open exhibition”

Lots of submissions for 2015 Open exhibition!

By Denise on June 15, 2015

A busy weekend taking in submissions for the 2015 Open exhibition which we are running in conjunction with Lancashire Artists Network. This is our 4th year at Oxheys and the 4th time we have run a summer open exhibition – it was fantastic to see so many artists coming back with submissions who have exhibited with us in the past and we really appreciate their support. Submissions invited for LAN/Oxheys Open exhibition

By Denise on May 26, 2015

After the success of the last Lancashire Artists Network Open exhibition in 2013 and Oxheys Summer Open in 2014, it seemed a good idea to join forces and collaborate on one for 2015. All local and Lancashire-based artists are welcome to submit work and everyone is invited to attend. Full details Summer 2015 Open – submissions with terms and entry form at LAN Exhibition-T&Cs 2015.

We hope to see lots of our old friends and make some new ones – please do submit work to what will, we are sure, be a fantastic exhibition of Lancashire art. We’ll also have a small ‘art market’ for the sale of small items so hopefully, something for everyone!

There is a theme of ‘change’ but this is entirely optional. All 2D and 3D work welcome – if anyone is interested in performance, please do send us your ideas. We look forward to seeing you in June.

Another successful experiment

By Denise on May 26, 2015

Not just one group of students but two – this time we were approached by a group of third year filmmaking UCLAN students, needing somewhere to build a couple of sets and make a film. Quite a lot of space was needed and even our project space could not easily accommodate that. As it happened however, a couple of resident artists who had spaces in the basement, were due to vacate at around the same time due to various reasons, so when Naomi then moved up to a vacant space on the first floor, the entire basement area became free. What an opportunity! Continue reading “Another successful experiment”
